Subjects in CLAT Syllabus: For UG

The UG-CLAT 2025 syllabus would evaluate candidates’ English comprehension, legal and logical reasoning skills, and quantitative techniques. The syllabus for CLAT also includes current affairs and general knowledge.

The CLAT test duration will be 2 hours with 120 MCQs carrying 1 mark each. 0.25 marks will be deducted for every incorrect answer. The CLAT syllabus questions will consist of the following 5 subjects:

CLAT Syllabus 2025 (for UG)

Following is the subject-wise list of essential topics for the CLAT exam syllabus 2025 for UG students:

1. English Language

In this section of the CLAT examination syllabus, candidates will be given passages of about 450 words, each derived from contemporary or historically important fiction and nonfiction writing. The passages would be of a standard that a 12th-grade student can read in about 5-7 minutes.

Every passage will be followed by a series of questions that will require candidates to demonstrate their comprehension and language skills, including their abilities to:

  • Read and comprehend the key point discussed in the passage and any arguments and viewpoints discussed or set out in the passage
  • Derive inferences and conclusions based on the passage
  • Summarize the passage
  • Compare and contrast the several arguments or viewpoints set out in the passage.
  • Understand the meaning of several words and phrases in the context used in the passage.

2. Current Affairs, including General Knowledge

This CLAT exam syllabus section will contain passages of up to 450 words, each derived from journalistic sources, news, and other non-fiction writing. The questions may include examining legal facts or knowledge discussed in or related to the passage. However, it would not require any extra knowledge of the law beyond the passage.

Every passage will be followed by a series of questions that will require candidates to show their awareness of numerous aspects of current affairs and GK, including:

  • Contemporary events of importance from India and the world
  • Arts and Culture
  • International Affairs
  • Historical events of continuing significance

3. Legal Reasoning

In this section of the CLAT syllabus 2025, candidates will be provided passages of around 450 words related to situations or scenarios involving legal matters, public policy questions, or moral philosophical inquiries. 

No prior knowledge of the law will be required to answer the questions in this section. Candidates will benefit from general awareness of contemporary legal and moral issues and the ability to apply general principles or propositions to the given scenarios.

Every passage will be followed by a series of questions that will require candidates to:

  • Identify and infer the principles and rules set out in the passage
  • Apply such rules and principles to several situations
  • Understand how changes to the principles or rules may alter their application to different fact situations.

4. Logical Reasoning

The Logical Reasoning section will include short passages of 450 words. Each passage will be followed by questions that will require candidates to:

  • Recognize an argument, its premises, and conclusions
  • Read and identify the arguments in the passage
  • Analyze reasoning patterns and assess how conclusions may depend on certain premises or evidence and how conclusions may be weakened or strengthened as an outcome of an alteration in premises or supporting facts
  • Infer what follows from the passage and use these inferences to new situations
  • Derive relationships and analogies, identify contradictions and equivalence, and assess the effectiveness of arguments.

5. Quantitative Techniques

The CLAT Quantitative Techniques syllabus for CLAT 2025 will consist of short sets of facts, propositions, or other textual representations of numerical data, followed by a series of questions. Candidates must derive information from the passages and apply mathematical operations to it.

The questions will require candidates to:

  • Derive, infer, and manipulate numerical details set out in passages.
  • Apply various 10th-standard mathematical operations to such information, including those from basic algebra, mensuration, ratios and proportions, and statistical estimation.

CLAT 2025 Syllabus: For PG

The PG-CLAT syllabus 2025 will emphasize the students’ comprehension abilities. The exam duration shall be 120 minutes, with one section:

  • The first section would comprise 120 objective-type questions, each worth 1 mark. 0.25 marks will be deducted for every incorrect answer.

The paper will be based on the subjects of the UG program, which include Constitutional Law, Administrative Law, Law of Contract, Jurisprudence, Torts, Family Law, Property Law, Criminal Law, Company Law, Public International Law, Tax Law, Environmental Law, and Labour and Industrial Law.

Objective Section

This section will provide candidates with extracts from primary legal materials, such as significant court decisions in several law fields, statutes, or regulations. Every passage will be followed by a series of questions that will require candidates to:

  • Read and comprehend the issues, any arguments, and viewpoints discussed in the passage
  • Awareness of the issues talked about in the passage, legal matters, and facts related to and arising out of the passage and the statute or judgment from which it is extracted
  • Summarise the passage
  • Apply the knowledge of the fields of law discussed in the passage.
