• The report assumes significance as it is the first comprehensive national assessment since the adoption of the Kunming-Montreal Global Biodiversity Framework in 2022.

National Report (NR) System under CBD

1. Purpose:

• The National Report system allows the Conference of the Parties (COP) to evaluate how effectively member countries are implementing commitments under the CBD.

2. Legal Basis:

• Article 26 of the Convention requires each signatory country to submit periodic reports on measures taken to implement the treaty.

3. Reporting Cycle:

• National Reports are generally submitted every four years.

4. Link with Global Biodiversity Targets:

• The 7th National Report (due February 2026) and 8th National Report (due June 2029) will track progress toward the 23 global biodiversity targets for 2030 under the Kunming–Montreal Global Biodiversity Framework.
