Note: The EWS reservation percentage does not mean that every NLU will show the same number of EWS seats. Seat strength, state reservation policies, domicile categories and supernumerary seats can change the actual number available at each university.

CLAT 2027 EWS Eligibility Criteria

EWS reservation depends on the candidate's eligibility for the respective CLAT programme and the NLU's reservation rules. The qualifying marks for CLAT UG and PG are different.

For CLAT UG, candidates must have passed Class 12 or an equivalent examination with at least 45% marks or an equivalent grade for General/OBC/EWS. The minimum qualifying percentage is 40% for candidates belonging to SC/ST/PwD categories.

For CLAT PG, candidates must have an LL.B. degree or equivalent. The minimum required marks are 50% for General/OBC/EWS, while SC/ST/PwD candidates need at least 45%.

Is there an age limit for CLAT EWS candidates?

There is no upper age limit for candidates applying for either the UG or PG programme through CLAT 2027. The qualifying marks mentioned above are the basic CLAT eligibility requirements. Candidates seeking an EWS seat must also meet the applicable EWS and NLU-specific conditions.

The number of EWS seats varies considerably across NLUs. Some universities have separate EWS seats for state and All India categories, while others link EWS seats to state reservation policies. The following EWS seats are available for the CLAT UG programme:

Which NLU has the highest EWS seats for CLAT UG?

NLSIU Bengaluru has the highest EWS UG allocation with 30 seats. MNLU Nagpur follows with 24 EWS seats under Maharashtra Reserved categories. NLIU Bhopal and DSNLU Visakhapatnam follow with 18, while MNLU Chhatrapati Sambhajinagar has 18 EWS seats for its Maharashtra reserved category.

CLAT 2027 EWS Seats in NLUs for PG Programme

EWS reservation is also available in the PG programme at several NLUs. However, the number of seats is different from the UG programme, and some universities follow state-specific EWS categories.

CLAT 2027 Domicile Rules for NLUs

EWS reservation and domicile reservation are not the same thing. EWS relates to the economically weaker section category, while domicile rules determine whether a candidate can claim a particular state-based seat category. Rules can differ across NLUs. Some universities use a study-based condition, while others provide alternative routes through parental residence or government service.

WBNUJS Kolkata Domicile Rules

For the West Bengal domicile category, a candidate must have studied for at least 10 years in a recognised educational institution in West Bengal by the last date of CLAT 2027 applications. 

Candidates currently living outside West Bengal can also qualify under the stated condition if their parents are permanent residents of West Bengal and have a permanent home address in the state. This means that current residence alone does not determine eligibility for the West Bengal domicile category.

NLSIU Bengaluru Karnataka Students Category

NLSIU has a Karnataka Students category based on schooling in the state. Candidates who have completed at least 7 years of study in a recognised educational institution in Karnataka can be considered under this category. Candidates must produce the required study certificates during counselling.

There are also specified exceptions for candidates who have not completed seven years of study in Karnataka. These include certain children of defence personnel, Karnataka State Government employees, Karnataka-cadre All India Services employees and eligible Central Armed Police Force personnel where service outside Karnataka affects the candidate's schooling period.

NLU Jodhpur Domicile Rules

NLU Jodhpur has a 25% horizontal reservation for Rajasthan State Domicile. For the UG programme, the seat structure includes 164 regular seats, 16 NRI/NRI-sponsored seats, and 16 EWS supernumerary seats, for a total of 196 seats. 

For the LL.M. programme, the structure includes 80 regular seats plus 8 EWS supernumerary seats.  The Rajasthan State Domicile provision is also 25% horizontal. The EWS supernumerary structure is therefore important when comparing NLU Jodhpur with institutions where EWS seats form part of the regular seat matrix.

GNLU Gandhinagar Domicile Rules

GNLU Gandhinagar provides a separate Gujarat domicile allocation. It specifies 40 Gujarat domicile seats for UG and 13 Gujarat domicile seats for the PG LL.M. programme. Candidates considering an EWS seat at GNLU should therefore check the applicable category and domicile conditions separately.

DSNLU Visakhapatnam Domicile Rules

For the Andhra Pradesh local candidate category, the candidate must have studied for 4 to 7 consecutive years in Andhra Pradesh, as applicable under the stated criteria. A candidate who studied outside Andhra Pradesh but claims native domicile can use the alternative route mentioned in the rules. 

In that case, the parents must provide a 10-year residence certificate issued by the local Tahsildar. Therefore, candidates should not assume that simply having an Andhra Pradesh connection automatically qualifies them for the domicile category.

What Candidates Should Check Before Claiming CLAT 2027 EWS Seats

Candidates applying under EWS should check three things before counselling:

• CLAT programme eligibility: Check the required qualification and minimum marks for UG or PG.
• EWS category conditions: Check the applicable EWS documentation and category requirements in the relevant admission rules.
• NLU-specific reservation: Check whether the EWS seat is All India, state-specific, domicile-linked or supernumerary.
