A Brief About Gujarat Judicial Service Exam

The Gujarat High Court conducts the Gujarat Judicial Service exam in 3 stages: Preliminary examination, Mains written examination, and a Viva-voce round. 

The prelims exam assesses aspirants’ knowledge of law and general awareness, while the Mains exam evaluates their understanding of substantive and procedural laws.

Format of Gujarat Judiciary Exam 2025

The GJS exam consists of 3 rounds to assess the aspirants’ knowledge, skills, and suitability for the judicial service. 

1. Gujarat Judiciary Pre Exam

This is the first stage of the GJS exam. It is an objective-type examination and serves as a screening test. The preliminary exam assesses a candidate’s knowledge of legal topics, current affairs, and Gujarathi proficiency.

2. Gujarat Judiciary Mains Exam 

Those who qualify in the preliminary examination proceed to the Mains. The Mains examination is more comprehensive and subjective. It assesses a candidate’s understanding of various laws, procedural laws, and their ability to analyze legal issues.

3. Gujarat Judiciary Interview Round

Candidates who clear the Mains examination are then called for a personal interview or viva voce. The interview panel evaluates the candidate’s personality, legal knowledge, and suitability for the judicial service.

1. Gujarat Judiciary Syllabus: Prelims

The preliminary examination (elimination test) carries 100 marks. The duration will be 2 hours, consisting of Multiple Choice Questions (MCQs), each of 1 mark with a negative marking of 0.33 for each wrong answer.

Those candidates securing 50% and above marks in the preliminary will be eligible for the Mains exam stage. However, the marks obtained in the prelim exam won’t be considered for preparing the final merit of the candidates.

The Mains examination consists of 2 papers & will be conducted in descriptive answer writing format with 3 hours allotted for each paper. Each of the Mains exam question papers shall consist of 100 marks each.

3. Gujarat Judiciary Syllabus: Interview

Candidates qualifying in the Mains examination will be shortlisted for the Viva Voce test round. The Viva Voce test shall be conducted for 50 marks.
