CLAT 2027 Expert Committee Report

Recently, the consortium set up a CLAT committee that has proposed several future reforms for the PG entrance examination. These reforms are not applicable to CLAT PG 2027. However, they may be applied to future exams. Let us understand what the CLAT 2027 expert committee report says in ten points:

1. The committee recommends continuing the common entrance examination i.e. CLAT PG, instead of relying on LLB marks, SOPs or writing samples.
2. LLB marks may not be directly comparable: Different universities use different evaluation standards, making undergraduate marks difficult to compare nationally.
3. The committee notes that increasing AI use can make it difficult to determine whether pre-written submissions genuinely reflect a candidate’s abilities.
4. The committee recommends Logical Reasoning and Legal Aptitude, Language and Comprehension, Quantitative Techniques, Legal Knowledge, and a constructed-response section.
5. Logical Reasoning and Legal Aptitude, Language and Comprehension, and Quantitative Techniques would collectively account for half the proposed paper.
6. Introduce a Legal Knowledge section and it would test legal concepts, principles, doctrine, critical issues and significant developments in Indian and international law rather than factual legal trivia.
7. Focus on recent legal developments in the last two years. Newsworthy legal developments would be restricted to the two calendar years immediately preceding the examination.
8. Candidates would choose one of three problems from Public Law, Private Law, Commercial Law or International Law and provide a structured legal analysis.
9. Test reasoning and articulation: The written component would assess structured legal reasoning and lucid articulation, including the ability to present arguments and counterarguments.
10. Use a two-stage evaluation process: MCQ scores would first create a shortlist of twice the total available seats, after which NLUs would evaluate written responses based on candidates’ NLU preferences.

CLAT PG 2027: Eligibility Criteria

CLAT PG 2027: Registration Process

The CLAT PG registration 2027 is open from August 3, 2026, on the official Consortium of NLUs website. If you want to appear for CLAT PG 2027, then you must complete the online registration before the deadline. 

Step 1: Visit the Official Website

Visit the official Consortium of NLUs website and open the CLAT 2027 application portal.

Step 2: Access the CLAT PG Registration Link

On the homepage, click on “CLAT 2027” and select the registration link. Choose the Postgraduate (PG) programme to begin the application process.

Step 3: Complete Registration

Register using a valid mobile number and email ID. An OTP will be sent to your registered mobile number for verification. Complete the verification process to activate your account.

Step 4: Fill in the CLAT PG Application Form

Log in using your registered mobile number and password. Enter your personal information, educational qualifications, LLB degree details, category, and other required information. Review every detail carefully before moving to the next step.

Step 5: Upload the Required Documents

Upload the necessary documents in the prescribed format. Ensure all certificates are issued by the competent authority and are clear and legible.

The required documents include:

• Recent passport-size colour photograph with a plain background
• Candidate’s signature
• SC/ST/OBC certificate (if applicable)

The CLAT PG 2027 result will be released by the Consortium of National Law Universities (NLUs) tentatively in the third week of December 2026. The scorecard will contain the candidate’s marks and rank, which are used during the counselling and NLU admission process.

CLAT PG Score Calculation Process

The CLAT PG examination currently carries 120 marks and consists of 120 objective-type questions. Under the latest official marking scheme:

• Each correct answer: +1 mark
• Each wrong answer: −0.25 marks
• Unanswered question: 0 marks
• Maximum marks: 120

Therefore, the CLAT PG score can be calculated using the formula:

CLAT PG Score = Number of Correct Answers − (Number of Incorrect Answers × 0.25)

For example, if a candidate answers 90 questions correctly and 20 incorrectly, the score will be 90 − (20 × 0.25) = 85 marks.

The current CLAT PG marking scheme awards 1 mark for each correct answer and deducts 0.25 marks for each incorrect answer, with no deduction for unanswered questions.

CLAT PG 2027 Tie-Breaking Criteria

If two or more candidates obtain equal marks in CLAT PG, the Consortium uses a specific tie-breaking procedure. According to the latest official CLAT PG instructions, the tie is resolved in the following order:

• Higher age — the candidate who is older gets preference.
• Computerised draw of lots — if the tie remains, the final tie is resolved through a computerised draw of lots.

CLAT PG 2027 Cut Off

The CLAT PG 2027 cut off is the minimum score or rank required for a candidate to be considered for admission to an LL.M. programme at a participating NLU. The cut off varies across universities and categories based on factors such as exam difficulty, number of candidates, seat availability, preferences and overall performance. CLAT PG 2027 Selection Process

The CLAT PG 2027 selection process involves the CLAT PG examination, result and rank declaration, counselling registration, seat allotment and final admission to the allotted NLU. 

1. Appear for CLAT PG 2027

You first have to appear for the CLAT PG 2027 examination. The latest CLAT PG pattern consists of 120 objective-type questions carrying one mark each, with a negative marking of 0.25 marks for every incorrect answer. You must meet the prescribed PG eligibility requirements to be considered for admission. In CLAT 2026, candidates needed an LL.B. degree or equivalent qualification with at least 50% marks, or 45% for SC/ST/PwD candidates.

2. CLAT PG 2027 Result and Rank List

After the examination, the Consortium releases the CLAT PG result and rank list. A candidate’s CLAT PG rank is important during counselling because seats are allotted based on merit, the candidate’s preferences, the NLU’s seat matrix and applicable reservation rules.

The rank alone does not guarantee admission. The Consortium states that seat allotments and admission offers are provisional and do not by themselves create an unconditional right to admission.

3. CLAT PG Counselling Registration

If you are eligible for counselling, you are invited to participate in the CLAT PG counselling process. Under the latest process, you will receive an invitation through your registered email address, SMS and your CLAT account. You have to log in to the CLAT portal and confirm your participation within the specified deadline.

You should not assume that merely appearing for CLAT PG automatically completes counselling. You must follow the Consortium’s counselling instructions and complete the required registration steps within the prescribed dates.

4. Selection of NLU Preferences

During counselling, candidates indicate their preferred participating NLUs according to the options available in the CLAT portal. You should check the LL.M. programmes, seat intake, reservation rules, fees and eligibility requirements of individual NLUs before finalising your preferences.

The Consortium advises candidates to refer to the respective NLU’s brochure and website because programme details, intake, reservation and fees can vary between universities.

5. CLAT PG Seat Allotment

After counselling registration, the Consortium publishes provisional allotment lists. Seats are allotted according to the candidate’s CLAT PG rank, preferences, category and the applicable NLU seat matrix.

The participating NLUs can revise their seat numbers and reservation break-ups before final allotment according to their respective policies.

6. Accept the Allotted Seat

If a candidate receives an NLU through counselling, they must complete the required payment and admission formalities within the specified deadline. You should carefully read the instructions accompanying each allotment list because the applicable payment and admission requirements are time-bound.

The latest counselling process uses options such as Freeze, Float and Exit, where applicable under the counselling instructions. You should select the option carefully because it determines whether they accept the current allotment, continue participating for a higher preference or withdraw from counselling.

7. Subsequent Rounds of CLAT PG Counselling

If you do not receive your preferred NLU in an earlier round, then you may be considered in subsequent counselling rounds, subject to vacancies and the counselling rules. The Consortium publishes separate allotment lists and schedules for the rounds.

You must complete the required payment, confirm your admission, and submit your options by the specified deadlines during the counselling process.

8. Pay the NLU Admission Fee

After accepting an allotted seat, you have to complete the admission process with the concerned NLU. This includes paying the university fee within the prescribed deadline and submitting the required documents.

The Consortium’s instructions make clear that original certificates and other documents are to be submitted to the allotted university in the manner specified by that university.

9. Document Verification and Final Admission

The allotted NLU verifies the candidate’s eligibility and documents before confirming admission. You may be required to submit your LL.B. degree/marksheets, category certificate, PwD certificate where applicable and other documents specified by the university.

Any discrepancy or false information in the application or admission documents can lead to cancellation of provisional admission.

CLAT PG scores are accepted by several National Law Universities (NLUs) for admission to their LL.M. programmes.
