Pradyod Shah, AIR 2 CLAT 2024

Pradyod Shah, AIR 2 CLAT 2024 Shares Preparation Strategy

From science to law, and from confusion to clarity, Pradyod Shah’s journey to AIR 2 in CLAT 2024 is a story of self-discovery, discipline, and peer learning. In this exclusive conversation with Law Prep Tutorial, Pradyod shares how he prepared for CLAT, dealt with the pressures of competition, and found his place at NLSIU Bangalore.

Unlike many CLAT toppers, Pradyod didn’t have a law background or a set path to follow. He explored, experimented, and eventually found his calling through dedication and curiosity. Now at NLSIU, he reflects on his preparation strategy, how group study helped him stay consistent, and the life lessons he gained beyond academics.

His interview is packed with practical advice for aspirants of CLAT 2027 and CLAT 2028 – from mastering mock analysis to staying emotionally balanced during preparation.

Pradyod Shah, who secured All India Rank 2 in CLAT 2024, is currently a second-year law student at NLSIU Bangalore. Coming from a non-law background, he is the first lawyer in his family — a journey that began in Class 11 with curiosity and evolved into passion.

Pradyod’s story is marked by self-awareness and experimentation. Initially interested in science, he shifted his focus after discovering his love for law through coaching classes and an internship in litigation. His preparation strategy centered around mock analysis, peer learning, and conceptual clarity, which he believes were key to his success.

At NLSIU, he describes his experience as “a place of mystery” — full of surprises, challenges, and growth. For him, CLAT exam wasn’t just an entrance exam but a learning journey about resilience, teamwork, and balance — lessons he continues to carry through law school.

Law Prep: How has NLSIU been treating you so far?

Pradyod: It’s been great. I’d describe NLS as a place of mystery. You arrive with expectations — some are met, others aren’t — but it’s a space of constant self-discovery.

Law Prep: What was your first year like compared to now?

Pradyod: My first year was full of confusion. I didn’t come from a law background and was the first lawyer in my family. I didn’t know whether to focus on moots, academics, or co-curriculars. It took time to find balance and build a support system.

Law Prep: How did you cope without having seniors or familiar faces at NLS?

Pradyod: It was difficult initially, but over time I found my rhythm. The key is to create your own circle of support. It makes all the difference in adjusting to college life.

Law Prep: Was there a cultural shock when you first arrived at NLSIU?

Pradyod: Absolutely. NLS is a melting pot of students from across the country, with very diverse perspectives. It really broadens your worldview — like stepping into a whole new universe.

Law Prep: When did you start your CLAT preparation?

Pradyod: I started in Class 11, which gave me two full years to prepare thoroughly.

Law Prep: What was your overall preparation strategy?

Pradyod: My focus was to master the basics first. Once mocks began, I’d attempt one or two per week and analyze them deeply. Mock analysis is the most underrated part of CLAT prep — it helps you identify patterns and recurring mistakes that mere repetition won’t fix.

Law Prep: How did you analyze your mocks effectively?

Pradyod: I’d sit with a friend (now also at NLSIU), and we’d discuss every mock in detail. If he got something right and I didn’t, we’d exchange reasoning and logic. That peer-to-peer learning was invaluable and kept us both accountable.

Law Prep: So group study worked better than solo prep for you?

Pradyod: Definitely. Group study helped me stay consistent and motivated. CLAT preparation can be mentally draining — having people who share your goals gives you both emotional and academic support.

Law Prep: Did your parents pressure you to perform?

Pradyod: Not at all. I’m fortunate to have parents who gave me full freedom. Once I decided on law, they stood by me without interfering or adding pressure.

Law Prep: You initially studied science. What made you switch to law?

Pradyod: I took science as a safe option, but realized I didn’t want to pursue JEE or NEET. A friend introduced me to CLAT, and as I began classes and mocks, I found myself genuinely interested. After CLAT, I even did a short litigation internship, which confirmed that law was right for me.

Law Prep: Looking back, what’s one mistake aspirants should avoid?

Pradyod: Don’t treat mock scores as a measure of your worth. I had high and low phases — but comparing yourself constantly kills motivation. Mocks are for learning, not judgment.

Law Prep: How do you balance focusing on mocks while not obsessing over scores?

Pradyod: Focus on why you went wrong, not how much you scored. Every mock is feedback. Analyze errors, but don’t carry emotional baggage from the marks.

Law Prep: Which section was toughest for you?

Pradyod: Logical Reasoning. It’s easy to think you’re right until you realize you misread the logic. Strengthening basics and identifying reasoning patterns helped me overcome it.

Law Prep: What’s your take on GMAT-style CR practice for CLAT?

Pradyod: I wouldn’t recommend it. GMAT is designed for a different audience. The best practice for CLAT is to solve and review as many mocks as possible. That’s what sharpens your reasoning instincts.

Law Prep: Finally, what’s your message to future CLAT aspirants?

Pradyod: The CLAT journey is worth it — not just for the result but for the growth it brings. Don’t fear any section, embrace challenges, and most importantly, take care of your self-esteem. CLAT teaches you resilience as much as reasoning.

“Mocks don’t define you — how you respond to them does. Learn, adapt, and keep moving forward.”
