How CLAT Drop-Year Became Vidit Rawat’s Biggest Turning Point

From securing Rank 8760 in Class 12 to achieving an extraordinary AIR 17 in CLAT 2025, Vidit Rawat’s story is one of courage, clarity, and disciplined reinvention.

A first-generation law aspirant from a family of engineers, he chose Humanities against all expectations – driven by his deep love for GK, curiosity for world affairs, and a natural inclination towards reasoning-based subjects. His drop year wasn’t defined by hours of study, but by sharp self-analysis, targeted practice, and the ability to simplify his CLAT preparation instead of complicating it with too many sources.

Vidit is a CLAT topper who openly discusses fear, mock score dips, CR struggles, burnout, and the emotional pressure of switching career paths – making him incredibly relatable. His transformation is proof that consistency beats talent, and that CLAT rewards strategic preparation, not brute memorization. In this exclusive interview, he shares his journey, mindset, and the lessons that helped him jump thousands of ranks.

Law Prep CLAT AIR-1 in Last 8 Years

Vidit Rawat, AIR 17 in CLAT 2025, stands out as a topper who carved his own academic path despite expectations to pursue engineering. Having always excelled in GK since childhood and driven by genuine intellectual curiosity, he discovered that CLAT aligned perfectly with his strengths.

His first attempt in Class 12 didn’t go well, but instead of giving up, he used it as fuel to rebuild his preparation during his drop year.

Vidit refined his strategy by limiting sources, mastering vocabulary, practising QT daily, and understanding CR patterns deeply. With the support of his family, mentors, and his study partner Ayush, he transformed into a disciplined, confident aspirant — ultimately earning a single-digit rank in one of the most competitive exams in India.

Law Prep: Why law, especially coming from a science-oriented family?

Vidit: Everyone in my family is an engineer, but my heart was always in GK — history, geography, political science, everything related to awareness. Humanities felt natural. When I discovered CLAT, the logical and analytical nature of the exam matched my interests perfectly.

Law Prep: You’ve always been strong in GK. Where did that foundation come from?

Vidit: I grew up reading trivia books, GK magazines, and The Hindu. In ICSE, we had regular GK assessments, and I always got A+ or A. Once I scored a C and cried the whole day! GK was more than a subject — it was my hobby.

Law Prep: Did you face family pressure as a first-generation law aspirant?

Vidit: Yes. My grandfather said my mom was ruining my career by letting me choose law. But my mother trusted me completely. Even when doubts arose, we discussed everything, and eventually my parents supported me wholeheartedly.

Law Prep: You attempted CLAT in Class 12 and got rank 8760. How did that affect you?

Vidit: I was embarrassed. I even texted Anupama ma’am asking, “Is this horrible?” My GK teacher said they’d try to get me to 800, not beyond. Today, I’m in the top 10. That journey itself feels unreal.

Law Prep: How did you improve vocabulary?

Vidit:

  • Word Power Made Easy
  • Writing meanings + synonyms + antonyms
  • Collecting words from newspapers
  • Daily revision

This structured approach helped me a lot in RC and CR.

Law Prep: You said QT troubled you in your first attempt. What changed?

Vidit: QT made me reactive. I practised QT morning and evening for two hours each. Still, in the exam, it became a deciding factor again. That’s when I realised QT requires daily consistency, not panic-driven practice.

Law Prep: How many hours did you study during your drop year?

Vidit: I never counted hours. My focus was on daily targets:

  • 50 vocab words
  • QT daily
  • 2 hours of newspaper
  • Revision
  • 1–2 analytical sets

If your scores improve, your hours don’t matter.

Law Prep: How did you manage burnout and emotional pressure?

Vidit: Initially, I deleted social media completely. But after two months, I felt lonely. So I added small joys:

  • Reading Harry Potter
  • Playing badminton & cricket
  • Doing yoga
  • Rewarding myself after completing targets

These small things kept me mentally balanced.

Law Prep: CR was your weakest section. How did you fix it?

Vidit:

  • Relearn basics through LPT classes
  • Watch lectures repeatedly and take detailed notes
  • Solve CLAT PYQs — patterns repeat!
  • Study with a partner (my friend Ayush)

Three months before CLAT, I cracked the pattern. This year, I got only one CR question wrong.

Law Prep: And Analytical Reasoning?

Vidit: It was my strength since childhood. But in the exam, one tough question wasted 15 minutes. I should’ve skipped it. Still, whatever I solved was accurate.

Law Prep: RC tips for aspirants?

Vidit: RC = vocabulary + reading habit. I always wrote:

  • Word
  • Meaning
  • Synonyms
  • Antonyms

This made revision fast and effective.

Law Prep: GK strategy for CLAT?

Vidit: My biggest mistake was using too many sources. Eventually, I cut everything down to:

Law Prep: Role of family, friends, and mentors?

Vidit: Massive.

  • Parents: Constant emotional and practical support
  • Ayush: My daily study partner
  • LPT faculty: Especially Anupama ma’am — she even informed me about my CLAT result!

Without them, this journey would’ve been impossible.

Law Prep: Were you aiming for a single-digit rank?

Vidit: I expected a good rank based on my provisional score, but CLAT is unpredictable. My goal was to stay calm and perform with clarity.

Law Prep: Final message to aspirants?

Vidit:

  • Don’t panic
  • Don’t follow too many sources
  • Revise consistently
  • Analyse every CLAT mock Test
  • Balance life — don’t isolate yourself
  • Consistency is more important than long hours

If I can move from Rank 8760 to Rank 17, so can you.
