WMO Ozone Bulletin Highlights Progress in Ozone Layer Recovery
Why in News
The World Meteorological Organization (WMO) released its Ozone Bulletin on the occasion of World Ozone Day (16th September) and the 40th anniversary of the Vienna Convention, noting significant strides in ozone layer recovery.
Key Findings of WMO Bulletin
The ozone layer is projected to return to 1980 levels (pre-ozone hole era):
- By 2066 over the Antarctic
- By 2045 over the Arctic
- By 2040 for the rest of the world
About the Ozone Layer
- Found in the stratosphere (15–30 km above Earth’s surface).
- Acts as a protective shield by absorbing harmful ultraviolet (UV) radiation from the Sun.
Ozone-Depleting Substances (ODS)
- Chlorine-based ODS: Chlorofluorocarbons (CFCs), Hydrochlorofluorocarbons (HCFCs), Carbon Tetrachloride (CTC), Methyl Chloroform.
- Bromine-based ODS: Halons, Methyl Bromide.
- Ozone depletion is more severe in the Southern Hemisphere (Antarctica) than the Northern Hemisphere (Arctic).

The World Health Organization (WHO) has released the 24th edition of its Model List of Essential Medicines (EML), updated every two years by the Expert Committee on the Selection and Use of Essential Medicines.

1. Glucagon-like peptide-1 (GLP-1) receptor agonists

About Diabetes and Obesity
1. Diabetes
