1. Corporate and Commercial Law

The Corporate and Commercial Law specialization at NALSAR develops advanced understanding of company law, financial regulations, mergers and acquisitions, and securities law.

It trains students to interpret and apply business laws in complex commercial transactions. Learners explore the theoretical and policy dimensions of the corporate ecosystem, preparing them for careers in law firms, corporate houses, financial consultancies, and regulatory agencies.

2. Criminal Law

The Criminal Law specialization focuses on modern and comparative criminal justice systems. It examines theories of punishment, substantive and procedural criminal law, and contemporary issues like cybercrime, economic offences, and criminal reform.

This stream enables students to develop critical insights into justice delivery mechanisms, making it ideal for litigation, judicial services, and academic research.

3. Public Law and Legal Theory

This specialization explores the interrelationship between the state, society, and individuals through constitutional principles, administrative law, and political theory. It focuses on how governance frameworks evolve and respond to social change.

Students critically analyze judicial reasoning, policy formulation, and legislative frameworks, equipping them for roles in constitutional litigation, policy research, or think-tanks.

4. Intellectual Property Law

The Intellectual Property Law stream covers copyright, patents, trademarks, and technology law. It emphasizes innovation, creativity, and the global dimensions of intellectual property regulation.

Students also engage with subjects like indigenous knowledge, biotechnology, and IT law. Graduates can pursue careers in IP firms, technology companies, or international organizations managing intellectual property frameworks.

5. International Trade and Business Law

The International Trade and Business Law specialization examines the intersection of domestic and global trade regulations. It includes study of WTO law, international contracts, investment arbitration, and cross-border commercial disputes.

Students learn to navigate the complex legal environment governing international business transactions and trade negotiations, ideal for careers in corporate law, diplomacy, or arbitration.

6. Environmental and Energy Law

The Environmental and Energy Law specialization addresses global and national challenges of climate change, sustainability, and renewable energy. It combines law, policy, and environmental governance to promote sustainable development.

Students study environmental litigation, green finance, and environmental impact assessments, preparing them for roles in NGOs, environmental law firms, and government policy bodies.

7. Insolvency and Bankruptcy Laws (in collaboration with IICA)

This specialization, offered jointly by NALSAR and the Indian Institute of Corporate Affairs (IICA), is India’s first LLM focused on Insolvency and Bankruptcy Laws. It aims to fill the gap in skilled professionals required for managing insolvency proceedings and corporate restructuring.

The course equips students with expertise in insolvency processes, liquidation frameworks, and corporate debt resolution, opening career avenues in insolvency professional agencies, NCLTs, consulting firms, and finance institutions.

8. General LLM

Students who choose not to specialize can pursue a General LLM, selecting electives from multiple streams. This option is ideal for those who wish to gain broad exposure across various legal domains, or plan careers in academia, civil services, or research-based organizations.

Before 2012, NALSAR’s Master of Laws was strictly specialization-based — students had to choose a specific stream at the start of the course. However, in 2012, the university introduced flexibility, allowing students to take electives from other streams.

In 2013, the one-year LLM programme was formally launched, replacing the older two-year structure.

Under the new system:

  • Students may pursue a specialization by completing at least four courses in one stream, or choose a General LLM if they prefer an interdisciplinary mix.

This flexibility ensures that students can tailor their learning path to their academic and career goals — a rare feature even among top NLUs.

The one-year LLM programme is divided into two semesters.

Every student must complete:

3 Mandatory Core Courses:

  • Research Methods and Legal Writing
  • Comparative Public Law / Systems of Governance
  • Law and Justice in a Globalizing World

Elective Courses:

  • Minimum four electives from various legal streams.

Dissertation:

Research paper submitted at the end of the course.

NALSAR also offers Teaching Assistantships in the final semester, where LLM students assist faculty in tutorials, evaluations, and mentoring BA LLB students — an initiative that grooms them for academic careers.

Academic & Research Goals:

  • Develop deep legal scholarship and critical analysis skills.
  • Encourage ethical research and professionalism.
  • Promote social justice through legal education and reform.

Programme-Specific Outcomes:

  • Criminal Law: Critical understanding of justice and accountability.
  • Corporate & Commercial Law: Analytical grasp of economic and regulatory frameworks.
  • IP Law: Innovation-driven legal reform perspectives.
  • Public Law: Contextual analysis of state-citizen relations.
  • International Trade Law: Understanding treaty law, trade disputes, and arbitration.
