Allotted candidates also receive official email/SMS alerts. Do not rely only on alerts—verify on the portal.

Selected candidates should log in to view the allotment notification, download the allotment letter, and choose Freeze, Float (last chance), or Exit within the deadline.

Understanding Your Seat Status in CLAT 2026 4th Merit List

The CLAT 2026 4th provisional allotment list places candidates in one of three clear situations. This round is sensitive because it is close to the end of counselling and decisions taken here strongly affect your final admission outcome.

If You’re Allotted a Seat for the First Time

If your name appears for the first time in the 4th merit list of CLAT 2026, it means a seat has opened due to withdrawals, exits, or non-payment in earlier rounds. This allotment is valid only if you take action within the deadline.

You must log in to your CLAT portal, review the allotted NLU, and choose between Freeze or Float, followed by payment of the confirmation fee. Since counselling is nearing completion, you should evaluate the institute carefully and avoid delaying your decision.

If Your Seat Got Upgraded

If you already held a seat and now see a higher-preference NLU allotted in the fourth round, your seat has been upgraded. This upgrade replaces your earlier allotment automatically. You cannot revert to the previous NLU later.

Even though you were already in counselling, this upgraded seat still requires you to confirm acceptance by selecting Freeze or Float and paying the confirmation fee within the stipulated window. Treat this as a fresh decision point.

If You’re Still Not Allotted a Seat

If you are still without a seat after the fourth allotment, you are running out of central counselling rounds. Only the final allotment list remains. At this stage, candidates should continue tracking the final list but also actively work on backup options.

Waiting without preparation can cost an entire academic year, so parallel planning becomes essential.

Freeze, Float, and Exit Options in CLAT 2026 4th Allotment Round

Freeze Option

The Freeze option is meant for candidates who are satisfied with their allotted seat and want admission certainty. Once you freeze, you are removed from further counselling rounds and your seat is locked.

You must pay the non-refundable confirmation fee within the deadline and later complete payment of the remaining university fee to the allotted NLU. Freeze is a safe option when you are confident about the college and do not want to risk losing the seat.

Float Option (Last Chance)

The Float option is available in the fourth round but this is the final round where floating is allowed. By choosing Float, you accept the current seat while keeping a chance for an upgrade in the final round.

You must still pay the confirmation fee. If an upgrade happens, your current seat is cancelled automatically. Float should be chosen only when there is a realistic possibility of improvement and you are prepared for uncertainty.

Exit Option

The Exit option is for candidates who do not wish to continue in CLAT counselling. Once you exit, your allotted seat is cancelled and offered to another candidate. You will not appear in any further CLAT allotment lists

Refund of the counselling registration fee depends on the timing of exit, as per official rules. Exit should be chosen only after evaluating all alternatives.

CLAT 2026 Counselling Fees After 4th Allotment

Fee Type Amount Applicable To Refundable
Counselling Registration Fee (General) ₹30,000 All registered candidates Yes (as per rules)
Counselling Registration Fee (Reserved) ₹20,000 SC/ST/OBC/EWS/PwD Yes (as per rules)
Confirmation Fee As notified Freeze / Float candidates No
University Fee Varies by NLU Candidates who Freeze As per NLU policy

Candidates choosing Freeze or Float in the fourth allotment must pay the confirmation fee within the deadline. Those who freeze must also pay the remaining university fee directly to the allotted NLU by the specified date. Missing payment deadlines leads to seat cancellation.

Pay the Confirmation Fee on Time

Track the Final Allotment List

If you have chosen Float, monitor the final allotment list closely. This is the last opportunity for any upgrade.

Seat Not Allotted Yet? Best Backup Options for CLAT 2026 Aspirants

If you don’t get a seat even after the final list, you still have three practical paths. Choose based on goals, rank, and timelines.

Option 1: Other Law Entrance Exams & Universities (OLETs)

OLETs and university-specific law exams provide additional admission windows in the same academic year. A focused, exam-wise plan helps at this stage. Law Prep’s OLET batches are structured for quick alignment with different exam patterns, and free OLET mock tests let you assess readiness without commitment. This option widens choices and reduces the risk of losing a year.

Join the best OLETs Online Coaching program now.

Option 2: Strategic Drop Year With a Finisher Plan

If your aim is a higher-preference NLU and your CLAT 2026 rank is close to recent CLAT 2026 cut-offs, a planned drop can work—only with structure. Law Prep’s Finisher Batch for droppers emphasises mocks, analysis, and targeted revision. Based on CLAT 2026 rank, students can get up to 100% scholarship, making the plan focused and cost-effective.

Option 3: Accept a Seat via Institutional Vacancies (Post-Central Counselling)

After the central process ends, some NLUs may fill residual seats through their own procedures. Track official NLU notices closely, prepare documents, and be ready for quick decisions. This route suits candidates flexible on location and timelines.
