When two or more candidates score the same marks in CLAT PG 2026, the Consortium follows a clearly defined tie-breaking procedure to finalise their ranks. The rules are simple and applied in the exact order given below:

1. Higher Age

If two candidates have identical scores, the older candidate is given the higher rank. This ensures a straightforward and transparent first-level tie resolution.

2. Computerised Draw of Lots

If candidates also share the same age, the rank is then decided through a computerised random draw. This digital lottery system ensures fairness and prevents any manual influence during the allocation of ranks.

Below is the expected CLAT PG 2026 cut off rank range for the top 10 NLUs (General Category):

Step 1: Calmly Review Your Scorecard and Rank

First, download your CLAT PG 2026 scorecard and check every detail carefully—name, category, marks, percentile, and AIR. Take a moment to understand your performance instead of reacting quickly. This clarity will help you make practical, confident decisions in the next few days.

Step 2: Compare Your Rank With Expected Cut Offs

Now, compare your AIR with the expected CLAT PG 2026 cut-offs for different NLUs. Make three lists: dream NLUs, realistic options, and safe options.

This simple exercise helps you decide counselling preferences strategically instead of guessing or following random advice from groups.

Step 3: Shortlist NLUs Based on Course, Fees, and Location

Do not look at rank alone. Check each NLU’s LLM specialisation, academic environment, annual fees, hostel facilities, and location.

Some NLUs are better for specific branches of law or litigation exposure. Create a priority list that matches your goals, budget, and future career plans.

Step 4: Register for CLAT PG Counselling on Time

Once the result is out, the Consortium will open the counselling portal. Log in, complete the CLAT 2026 counselling registration form, and pay the counselling fee strictly within the given deadlines. Missing a single date can cost you an NLU seat even after getting a good rank.

Step 5: Arrange and Scan All Required Documents

Keep all documents ready—scorecard, CLAT PG Admit Card, identity proof, category certificate, LLB marksheets, migration certificate, and photographs. Scan them clearly in PDF format and store them in a separate folder. This saves time and stress during counselling, document upload, and final reporting at the allotted NLU.

Step 6: Fill and Lock Your NLU Preferences Carefully

During counselling, you have to choose and lock your NLU preferences. Always place your top choices higher, but stay realistic based on your rank. Avoid random ordering. Once locked, changes are not allowed, so double-check your list and discuss it with mentors or parents before final submission.

Step 7: Track Seat Allotment Rounds and Consortium Notices

After registration, follow every notification from the Consortium. Check the portal and your email regularly for seat allotment results, upgrade options, and fee payment instructions. Many students lose good opportunities only because they ignore emails or check updates late during crucial counselling rounds.

Step 8: Decide on Accept, Upgrade, or Exit Options Wisely

When you receive an allotted seat, you usually get options like accept, opt for upgrade, or exit. Think calmly before choosing. If you are close to your dream NLU and your rank supports it, upgrade can work. If you are satisfied and secure, accepting the seat early may reduce stress.

Step 9: Plan Finances, Hostel, and Relocation

Once your admission looks confirmed, start planning practical aspects like fee payment deadlines, education loan (if needed), hostel booking, and travel arrangements. Talk to seniors or alumni for ground-level insights about campus life. This helps you start your LLM journey with clarity instead of last-minute chaos.

Step 10: Create a Backup Plan for the Future

If the result does not match your expectations, do not see it as a full stop. You can explore other LLM options, strong universities outside NLUs, or prepare again for CLAT PG with a focused strategy. Reflect on what went wrong, fix those gaps, and treat this as a stepping stone.

  • Not verifying details on the scorecard: Many students skip checking their name, category, and marks, which can lead to issues during counselling.
  • Missing counselling registration deadlines: Even a good rank becomes useless if you fail to register on time.
  • Ignoring expected cut-offs while choosing NLUs: Random preference filling results in losing better options.
  • Uploading unclear or incorrect documents: Wrong formats or blurry scans often lead to rejection during verification.
  • Not arranging documents early: Last-minute document collection creates unnecessary stress and delays.
  • Selecting NLUs without research: Fees, specialisations, faculty, and placements should guide your choices, not assumptions.
  • Choosing Exit or Freeze without thinking long-term: A rushed decision may stop you from getting a higher NLU in later rounds.
  • Not preparing a backup plan: In case the rank doesn’t match expectations, having alternative options avoids panic.
